Apr 15, 2008 - TEAM International contributes in the process of establishing stronger links between businesses and higher education.

TEAM International’s Training Manager attends the All-Ukrainian Forum ‘Business and Education: Inevitable Cooperation’ that took place in Kyiv/Ukraine on April 11, 2008.

TEAM International delegated its Training Manager to participate in the Forum organized by Ukraine’s Ministry of Education and Science, Consortium for Enhancement of Ukrainian Management Education (CEUME), and Hock Training Inc by the instrumentality of the MATRA Program (the Royal Embassy of the Netherlands in Ukraine) and the American Chamber of Commerce in Ukraine.

The Forum had the following precedent: thousands of Ukrainian students graduate from their educational institutions without gaining appropriate knowledge and skills essential for their professional activity. As a result of this, the employers face a real problem relating to a huge knowledge gap in new hires. The national educational system obviously needs assistance from the business community in order to prepare ‘the critical mass’ of skillful managers and professionals possessing knowledge to the extend allowing them to meet with the most sophisticated business needs.

The goals of establishing cooperation between business and education have been clearly identified at the Forum – to raise educational standards, to increase students’ motivation, to improve the curriculum and to upgrade the text books, to provide opportunities for educators’ self-development and instant training to allow Ukrainian educational institutions to prepare highly competent and well motivated future employees.

The Forum provided a good opportunity for business communities to express their concerns about the current state of Ukraine’s higher education straight to the educational leaders and for educators to discuss ways of establishing partnerships with the businesses.

The Forum discussed both the current issues and the possible recommendations for the purpose of establishing better links between businesses and education. Here are some of such recommendations:

• To pass a Law on ‘Post-Graduation Education’;
• To amend a legislative base with the statutes that would clearly determine liabilities and duties of each partnership subject and principles of partnership interaction;
• To amend and revise Ukraine’s Law on Taxation for the purpose of providing privileges for the companies that take students for practical training and employ them after the training;
• To lift a ban on funding scientific research by private higher educational establishments;
• To establish the national service of exploration of Ukraine’s job market;
• To refocus on new forms and methods of management education; to use the concept of neomanagement as one of the tools of rebuilding the system of training of Ukrainian managers;
• To encourage structural and content changes in higher education in compliance with the requirements of the European higher education standards;
• To enhance the development of partnerships between the institutions and business companies for the purpose of modernization of Ukrainian economies; to encourage the businesses to order research projects to higher educational institutions, i.e. to involve them in technical re-equipment and maintenance of enterprises;
• To distribute more information about the world’s best practice in terms of cooperation between institutions and businesses etc.

These and other recommendations will be forwarded to Ukraine’s Verhovna Rada, Cabinet of Ministers, Ministry of Education and Science, industry/business players and higher educational institutions.

Participation in the Forum ‘Business and Education: Inevitable Cooperation’ was an important event for TEAM International, since training and development as well as collaboration with universities and educational centers have always been the company’s core values.
